IMPORTANT NOTICE: Canada Coal Tar Sealer Ban Is Coming – What You Need to Know
If you’ve been sealing driveways or parking lots for any length of time, chances are you’ve used coal tar sealer. It’s known for being the toughest, longest-lasting, and easiest emulsion sealer to apply. But big changes are coming soon that every contractor in our industry needs to know about.
Coal Tar Sealer Is Being Banned in Canada
The federal government has officially announced a nationwide ban on coal tar-based sealers.
Here’s what you need to know:
- After October 1, 2025 – No more manufacturing or importing of coal tar sealer in Canada.
- After December 31, 2025 – It will be illegal to sell coal tar sealer anywhere in the country.
This ban is part of new environmental protection regulations aimed at reducing the release of toxic substances into the environment—particularly the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in coal tar products.
We’ve Got You Covered
At Pavement Depot, we understand how much our contractors rely on coal tar for its unmatched durability and ease of use.
✅ We will continue to stock coal tar sealer at both our New Dundee and Milton locations until the end of 2025—so you can finish out the season strong before the ban takes effect.
What Comes After Coal Tar?
While we’re still evaluating which product will officially replace coal tar, rest assured—Pavement Depot will be carrying the best alternative available for the 2026 season and beyond. Our focus is on offering a high-quality, long-lasting sealer that meets industry standards and allows you to continue delivering professional results your customers can count on.
There are other long-lasting sealers on the market that are legal alternatives to coal tar. However, it’s important to understand that these products do not apply the same way. Most of them are more sensitive to weather and temperature, and they often require more skill and preparation to get the best results. They’re not impossible to use, but they demand proper training and realistic expectations.
At Pavement Depot, we don’t just simply sell you the product and leave you guessing, we’re committed to educating and supporting our customers through the transition. We will be offering free educational and training sessions during the off-season to help you understand the differences, learn proper application methods, and avoid costly mistakes.
Whatever the next best product is—we won’t just sell it, we’ll make sure you know exactly how to use it to succeed in the field.
Winter 2025: Get Educated and Stay Ahead
To help you prepare for the switch, we’ll be offering free educational and training sessions during the off-season. These sessions will cover what to expect from the new products, and how to adjust your application process if needed.
The Bottom Line
- You can keep using coal tar until the end of 2025
- After that, it will no longer be legal to sell or use it
