Switching to AE from Coal Tar in Canada
Asphalt emulsion is an excellent alternative to coal tar emulsion sealer, which is now banned across Canada due to its high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Asphalt emulsion is now the preferred sealcoat type, and has vastly improved over the past 20-25 years.
For best results with asphalt emulsion, Top Tuff additive and sand are recommended. Apply with an air-operated asphalt emulsion spray system, like the AirBoss 300 sprayer, or with synthetic nylon brushes. Centrifugal, banjo, and trash pumps may be used with standard asphalt emulsion (no polymers or sand added).
Recommended Mix Design (based on 100 gallons):
- MasterSeal: 100 gallons
- Water: 15-25 gallons
- TopTuff Polymer Additive: 2 gallons
- Sand: 300 – 500 lbs.
Mix to a uniform consistency.
